University of California Berkeley ATDP Art Explorations

In Pete Ippel’s ATDP Wednesday’s exploration classes students are shown how to utilize image manipulation programs to create art projects in a variety of formats. Feel free to download the image manipulation exploration syllabus or the animation exploration syllabus.

DIGITAL IMAGING MANIPULATION – 8:30pm-12:00pm July 9th, 16th, and 23rd 2008 – Berkeley CA

Digital photography is about seeing, thinking, and understanding ratios. Once ISO/ASA, shutter speed, and aperture are mastered, compositional guidelines are keys to the next level. After a brief history of photography, and a image manipulation tutorial on the first day, the students were free to modify images as they saw fit, and were welcome to draw. The second session was filled with a brief lecture on composition and crafting an image, then we took a field trip to Berkeley’s green quads. The third day was a brief review of shutter/aperture/ISO relationships and a work day where a five print portfolio with images regarding the following themes: humor, political, fine art, photo journalism, and documentary.

The class terminated with a final critique of the work, where students had to explain how and why their images fit into the themes. Feel free to view the entire set of ATDP student portfolio images in the photography section of hypermodern.net.

The final projects are ambitious in their scope considering that for one second of movement typically 30 still frames are required. Some ATDP students executed over 300 frames, or made more than one animation. Various techniques are explored including hand-drawing, stop-motion, clay-mation, and compositing. These dedicated students were challenged by Image Ready in that the program is designed for making short clips (animated gifs for the web) at low resolution, not 300 frame beasts at 8mb per image. Through their patience and dedication, I’m delighted to present the following final projects.
