Pulling a fast one
Is not the case for me on the "Erg". I was talking with Spyke earlier this week, and he said at the Y in Hawaii, he tried it out, and it was an amazing workout...

Holy cow was he ever right...I pulled a 5,000m in 20:59 and I was dripping, I think I can go a lot faster as my technique imporves...

Track and Field Classes
So today at the Y, the teacher for the cardio kickboxing class was at home ill, and in a pinch, I did a circuit training class with a skips, machine guns, b skips, flat-steps, and a whole lot of plyo stuff...it was awesome and people really liked it...they called me the "Hero of the YMCA", what a nice compliment.

Running, Lifting and BUNREX



So on Monday I ran 30 min at 6 min miles on the treadmill, so that works out to 5 miles...booyah!

In other news, I friggin' love the Free Motion Hamstring Machine, and I've also ditched lat pulls for 3x10 wide grip pullups, I feel like BW is a better choice.

Today in step ups it was a killer set too...4x12 @ 170. I am interviewing with University High School for Assistant Coach of Women's Varsity Basketball...I'll post tomorrow with how the interview went.

Also Team Sting Poomps is branching out, to basketball, I'm developing a logo for the YMCA league here in SF...I'll post the logo when it's ready...

Lifting again

I was just reading your team page...i read this often...it sounds as though you are getting much stronger...I on the other hand, am getting much weaker! haha

Next weekend I am going to a Run, Jump, throw instructor's class...it is a program to teach kids basic motor skills involved in sports...it should be great. Next month I am taking my Level 2 coaching course in Jumps - so i'll soon be able to coach the Pole Vault, what a scarry thought!!

I just started a new assignment at work this week...it is a little slow at first, but that is quite normal when you start somewhere new...I'm glad it's friday

First day on the job...
So I shadowed on the fitness floor, and I'm totally ready for my first day on Thursday. I helped someone with the leg press, and discussed the advantages of plyometric training and the wobble-board.

I didn't lift after I taught abs and AOA, and missed the ball class, from this Monday forward, I'll be free though...It's a bit concerning, I have a sore left hamstring, right behind the knee on the right ligament...so it's probably best that it rest...I have been playing a lot of basketball.

Dead Lift Max
I was really psyched this morning, I taught a bodyworks/stretch class, so I was well warmed up and rested from taking a break from squats and cleans earlier this week.

I lifted 315 no problem, and then figured I could DL the same I squat, so I loaded up 350...HUSK! Made it, then took a break and tried 365, I didn't even budge it, so I've got a goal for next testing cycle.

Amazing Stats Page from the Motherland
So yea, it's from Holland (my roots) and yes we have a history of jumping big...so this is the absolute world records high jump list and progression in athletics. Thank you to Weia for the great site...

I know that somewhere there is a firsts list...just got to find it...Post it if you've got it.

To start off, some sick, sick KD, and he's really far away.

Back to testing, after a day off, we went to the lifting max in squats and cleans. I felt pretty good, started off with cleans. I was a bit ambitious and loaded the bar with 235. Got it racked cleanly 4 times, but I'm pissed i didn't get the 5th one. That comes out to 265lbs (almost 270, damn). For Pete, that's 1.45x the body weight(183 right now).
Squats weren't as impressive but felt good at 275 warm up, so I jumped to 315lbs, three plates. Got 5 pretty quality ones down, coming to 360(1.97x). A PR and up from 340 six weeks ago.
Pete, thanks for the step by step, I don't think you've ever taken me though it. I'll take you though my first time when it happens.
P.S. Everyone know Bannister first broke 4:00, but who first jumped 7'?

 
Wellness Training
So I'm certified now to be a "wellness coach" at the YMCA, and will be starting work a week from tomorrow...

I also bench maxed today 2x175 I think I can go higher than that. Again, timing was wierd...just something I have to get back into.

 
Inspiration: Penn Dual at CU 2001
Pete Ippel Jumps 2.15mIt was my last home meet of my career, the band came over after CU beat Syracuse in lacrosse at Schoellkopf Field along with a bunch of fans. The Friday before, I had been asked to speak to some alumni supporters at a catered dinner, I said to "Come on over to the track Saturday, I'm going to break the high jump record" (I was really feeling positive, as I had just seen the video from HUGE 6'8" clearances at Sea Rays...

I was jumping great first attempt clearances from 1.96-2.06, then 2.10 second attempt and in competition Adam Chubb and I were both trying to set records, and they were 2.14m, so we opted for 2.15. (Coach Taylor was instrumental in this, as he believed in it, I asked if I should go for 2.14 as my previous pr was 2.10). The first attempt I was right there, and just knicked it off, I just needed to get my toes off the ground. That was the secret, not dragging on the right (I learned this from that same video at Sea Rays, and had been working on it). Second attempt, I went over the bar, landed in the pit and shouted, and I've never felt something so amazing in my life. My knees went week, and I was taken off the mat by my training partner Matt Sarli, and carried off my Jeremy Blanchet.

Pete Ippel sets Cornell High Jump RecordI was shaking and exhausted from the adrenaline. I got a big hug from coach Taylor and never understood what tears of joy were 'till that instant. Coach Taylor, snapped me out of it with, "You've still got a competition to win" and I took a jog after splashing some water on my face...the 4x400 was happening at the time, so it was the last event of the day...(and it was very close or maybe even tied, I can't remember).

At the time, there were no NCAA regionals, it was only provisional and automatic qualification (you guys are so lucky now) 2.18 was provisional and 2.23 automatic. I tried for 2.18 and was so emotionally exhausted that I didn't get over, Chubb did, and on the day I set Cornell's record, we lost the meet, and I got second in the men's high jump.

It's the single most amazing thing I have ever experienced. It was the best technique, I felt like there was a string coming out of my chest, and I was ripped off the ground straight into the air and it was effortless...no drag, just a huge plant, and enjoy the ride...

I want that feeling again.

 
Testing Cleans

I spoke to Coach Taylor this morning, and got really psyched about testing again.

So the goals according to him should be 2.5 x body weight for squats (160 x 2.5 = 400) and 1.5 x body weight in cleans (1.5 x 160 = 240) Today I started too light, ended up catching 205 on the 3rd attempt (I started *in* the cage, and that was akward as hell as I almost hit the edges) so I got out of there and right away caught it...at 215 (my goal for this test) I was getting it up past my shoulders, and not really taking a risk to catch it. I just (like we said a long time ago) have to throw my self under that...it's tough I wussed out on metal weights, it's a bit tougher than the rubber ones and platforms at CU...

Wed. I ran hills and I can see a clear improvement on the 50m hill sprints, running low 12's-13's now, (and started around 14's-15's in June) My HR is about 155-160 so that's in the right range.

I did check out Nietos stats, and have started to keep my own again. My PRs in college were 380 in squats (soph, and I think I was shallow) and 225 in cleans senior year (that was a killer lift, with a huge celebratory "HUSK!").

So right now I'm at 2.18 x bw in squats and 1.28 x bw in cleans...I need to get strong for DECEMBER!

Do you guys test for bench and inc. bench?

Next time I test, I'm definitely going to get a beeper (so I know when to come back up) and get a better nights sleep, I was working on an art project till 3 and slept till 6 and then tested...(DUH!)

In other news, it was Lauren Kilduff's birthday on the 4th, and we had a nice little chat, she's doiing well in NYC and hooping in a young professionals league...it's nice to reconnect with the CU Jumps crew.

We're definately testing this week too, got through the running stuff today and lifting on Thursday. I came through and PR'ed in the 30's and 500. Nothing too fast, but great improvenments from last year.
Standing 30m: 4.14 sec (down from 4.15, nothing special)
Flying 30m: 3.55 sec (down from 3.65)
500m: 73 sec (Stoked about that one because I finally broke 74!)
We'll see how the lifting goes, 350 in squat and and 275? in cleans would be awsome.
Speaking of testing, look at JamieNieto.com under "stats" and "view my training tests and stats" to see his stuff. Interesting...

Testing this week
Well, I taught my AOA class today, and did the normal squats, lunges, etc...then abs, and tried to test for squats. I did a full warm-up, a few reps with just the bar, and loaded up 350.

My first attempt was a good one, slow down, got deep, and forgot to push...failed...

Second attempt adjusted, went way shallow, and got it back up...didn't count to shallow...

Third attempt, I went down and had a slight bit of help with the push up, and I think I was too shallow again...(I counted it as a 350 lift with an asterisk)

I really need to get a beeper so I know when to push, especially when testing...
